Commitment Books Archive
The names of over 50,000 inmates who served time at the Burlington County Prison between October 1871 and January of 1952 are recorded in numerous commitment books preserved by Burlington County. The information contained in these books appears here in a searchable database.
We are missing books for the following periods:
Jan. 1878 through Aug. 1884 Mar. 1919 through Nov. 1920
Oct. 1886 through Oct. 1990 Nov. 1929 through Dec. 1930
Apr. 1894 through Jan. 1895 Jan. 1931 through Oct. 1936
May 1898 through Jan. 1903 Jan. 1952 through Nov. 1965
Jun. 1904 through Jan. 1908
For each entry after 1936, the search engine provides the following: name of the prisoner, arresting officer, when received, complainant, charge, committing officer and when discharged. For entries before 1936, the complainant and arresting officer are not noted.
If you want to search an inmate or officer by name, type the last name into the search box and then click “search”. For an advanced search, you can type the first name.
If you are searching by charge, remember that charges were noted differently by different people. Thus, “assault and battery” might be “assault” or “A&B”. Sometimes the charge was misspelled, e.g., “adultry”, “ludeness”, “poligamy”. Many,
perhaps even most, of the inmates were vagrants and/or drunks and the charge might be noted as “tramp”, “drunk”, “disorderly”, “drunk and disorderly” or “D&D”.
To search the names of those received into the jail on any given year, month and/or day, enter the date by scrolling or typing the year, month and/or day. Use the numeral for the month (e.g., “May” is “5”).
Be sure to “clear” between each search.
